Dr. Mary C. Burke
Director of Training, Counseling Psychology
Dr. Burke earned her Bachelor of Science and her Master’s of Science degrees from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the APA accredited Counseling Psychology Program at the University of Memphis, in Tennessee. Dr. Burke’s primary teaching interests are in theories of counseling, clinical techniques, and the mental wellness of underserved groups. Her commitment to social justice and equity is manifest in her research, teaching, and activism. Currently she represents the Association for Women in Psychology on the United Nations Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations Committee on Mental Health. In addition to her participation in various national and international professional associations, Dr. Burke collaboratively founded and directs the Project to End Human Trafficking. This United States based non-profit group works regionally, nationally, and internationally to raise awareness about the enslavement and economic exploitation of human beings. During the summer months, Dr. Burke serves as affiliate faculty in the Department of Counseling and Human Services at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Frances Kelley
Dr. Kelley earned her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the APA accredited Counseling Psychology program at the University of Maryland, College Park. She also has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Drew University and a Master of Business Administration degree and Master of Science degree in Community Counseling from Georgia State University. Dr. Kelley’s primary teaching interests include substance abuse counseling, ethics and professional practice, cross cultural counseling, and clinical practicum. Dr. Kelley has an interest in distance learning and has taught over sixty online and blended counseling and psychology courses for several universities. Dr. Kelley has worked with a variety of clients over the past 16 years including adolescent and adult substance abusers, incarcerated male sex offenders, and trauma survivors. She has worked for several university counseling centers, a private practice where she conducted individual and group therapy with adolescents and adults, a psychiatric hospital where she supervised a crisis intervention team, and the University of Maryland Health Center where she was a substance abuse counselor and the coordinator of the DWI Treatment Program. Dr. Kelley’s publications and research interests have explored psychotherapy process and outcome especially as it relates to the therapy relationship and counselor competency in working with marginalized populations. Recently she has been involved in a series of studies investigating the real relationship in therapy both from the therapist and client’s perspective. Dr. Kelley has presented her research locally, nationally, and internationally.

Dr. Robert A. Reed
Chair, Department of Psychology and Counseling
Dr. Reed is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology and Counseling. He earned his doctorate in psychology (Psy.D.) from the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to joining Carlow’s faculty in 1995 he was an active practitioner and clinical director of a child and adolescent outpatient program. Bob is a licensed psychologist with over 25 years of clinical experience, he is a certified school psychologist and he currently consults for a mental health program that works with seriously troubled youth. Bob’s teaching interests are in the areas of research methods and assessment. His publications and research interests have explored the role of the psychologist in the assessment of seriously troubled youth, the emotional needs of the gifted and the psychosocial effects of working in emergency medical services. He is currently working to develop an instrument for measuring visualization skills.

Dr. Joseph Roberts
Dr. Roberts received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Evansville in creative writing and his Master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in social work. Recently, he earned his Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the APA accredited Counseling Psychology program at West Virginia University. Dr. Roberts has worked in a variety of clinical setting including the university counseling centers of Carnegie Mellon University and Penn State University, as well as both urban and rural community mental health centers. He prefers doing therapy and assessment with adolescents and young adults. Dr. Roberts has worked with in-home services and has co-led therapeutic process and anxiety groups. Teaching interests are varied and include personality assessment, ethics, human development, history and systems, and group therapy. Research interests are directed to in-home therapeutic methods such as wraparound therapy, as well as supervision issues, and the implementation of theory into practice. One such implementation currently being developed is the Fraternity Integrity Alliance project that hopes to reduce sexual assaults and relationship violence within the collegiate Greek community.
