Program-Specific Requirements

Master of Arts in Educational Praxis: The educational goal of this Master of Arts degree in Education is to engage experienced, practicing teachers in learning processes through which they are able to assess and enhance their capacities for personal reflection, collaboration, inquiry, competent and compassionate service, and creative scholarship. At the heart of this program is an emphasis on educational praxis. Learners are expected to reflect on their teaching and, through a discursive and deliberative process, gain insight into teaching and learning.

Master of Education in Art Education: Demonstration of studio competencies via a portfolio review by art education faculty.

Master of Education in Early Childhood Education: Successful candidates will have previous degrees and/or experience in early childhood education or child development. Candidates who seek initial early childhood teacher certification along with the master’s degree are required to complete initial certification requirements as well as the master’s degree course work. Student teaching is required for initial teacher certification.

Master of Education in Early Childhood Supervision: A degree in early childhood education or child development and three years of professional service in early childhood education are required. Candidates should have demonstrated leadership potential, and evidence of collaborative working abilities.

Master of Education in Educational Leadership: At least three years of teaching experience and Instructional II teaching certificate are required. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic ability and promise of growth in leadership skills.

Master of Education with certification options (Elementary Education, Instructional Technology Specialist, Secondary Education in specific content areas, Special Education): Candidates pursuing initial teacher certification must provide evidence of a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 and must have taken and passed two English courses (one composition, one literature) and two college-level mathematics courses. Instructional technology candidates must provide evidence of introductory computer application course or demonstrate proficiency through equivalent experience.

Principal Certification: Current state certification as a teacher or specialist and completion of five years of professional service at the time of application for certification are required.

Early Childhood Supervisor Certification: Certification in early childhood education and five years of professional service in early childhood education at the time of application for certification are required.
