Marilyn P. Donnelly Distinguished Writers in Residence

Naomi Shihab Nye is a poet, essayist, children’s author, and songwriter. She is the author and/or editor of more than 20 volumes. Her books include 19 Varieties of Gazelle, Poems of the Middle East, Fule, Never in a Hurry (a collection of essays), Habibi (a novel for young readers), Lullaby Raft (a picture book), Baby Radar, and an anthology, Is This Forever or What?: Poems and Paintings from Texas. Her newest book of poems, A Maze Me: Poems for Girls, was published in spring 2005. A Lannan Fellow, she was a Guggenheim Fellow, and a Wittner Bynner Fellow (Library of Congress). She has received, among other honors, a Lavan Award from the Academy of American Poets, four Pushcart Prizes, and numerous awards and citations for her children’s literature, including two Jane Addams Children’s Book Awards. She is a regular columnist for Organica and poetry editor for The Texas Observer. Her work has been presented on NPR on such shows as A Prairie Home Companion and The Writer’s Almanac. She has been featured on two PBS poetry specials, The Language of Life with Bill Moyers and The United States of Poetry, as well as the PBS program NOW with Bill Moyers.

Desmond Egan, the MFA poetry mentor for the first-ever Irish residency, appeared at Carlow University in March 2005.
Louise Glück, United States Poet Laureate 2003-2005, was the inaugural speaker for the Marilyn P. Donnelly Distinguished Writers-in-Residence, and the Carlow University Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program. She is the author of nine books of poetry, including The Wild Iris, which received the Pulitzer Prize and the William Carlos Williams Award (1992). She appeared at Carlow University in January 2005.
